EyeBreak
Gentle 20-20-20 eye breaks for your Mac. Free and open source.
May reduce eye strain and dry-eye symptoms by supporting healthier screen habits.
Install — about a minute
- Press ⌘ space, type Terminal, press return.
- Click Copy, paste into the Terminal window, press return.
- Follow any prompts. When it finishes, look for the eye icon in your menu bar (top right).
curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/sviatil0/eyebreak/main/scripts/install.sh | bash
The command installs Homebrew first if you don't have it — that step may ask for your Mac password.
Prefer a normal download?
- Download the app: latest release → the EyeBreak-…zip file.
- Unzip it and drag EyeBreak into your Applications folder, then double-click it.
- macOS will say it "cannot check it for malicious software" — that's because this free app isn't registered with Apple's paid program. Click OK.
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down, click Open Anyway, and confirm. It opens normally from then on.
What it does
- Every 20 minutes, a gentle reminder to look ~20 feet away for 20 seconds
- Snooze or skip any break — it's a habit, not a rule
- Pauses by itself during presentations and full-screen apps
- No camera, no account, no internet connection — everything stays on your Mac
